“It’s opening night, it’s opening night” sung by the Usherettes at the start of the show. That indeed it was “Opening Night” for the award winning show “The Producers” Thursday night at Popejoy.

How can you write a review about an awful musical that was amazing! I’m sure the main characters Bailystock & Bloom would like for us to write a review about how terrible the show was. But how could we when we absolutely loved it!

The Mel Brooks award winning film transformed into a Broadway hit will dazzle Albuquerque audiences this weekend only. If you’ve seen the movie you know what a crazy story it is and after seeing it on the stage, it remains the same outrageous story with an added boost.

Max Bailystock and Leo Bloom played by David Johnson & Richard Lafleur are the unlikely inseparable duo keeping audiences laughing the entire show. These two are also a ton of fun out of character. Here are some pics with our Eva Videla on KASA 2 Style Friday morning.

With the many numbers such as “Der Guten Tag Hop-Clop” (yes, that’s the title) “Keep It Gay” & “When You’ve Got It, Flaunt It” you’re in for a laugh. The top notch choreography and set design transform the Popejoy theater into a Broadway stage.

So many crowd favorites like Ulla (whatever her last name was) played by Jessica Ernest. Is the beautiful seductive assistant to Bailystock & Bloom. Another favorite introduced later in the show is Carmen Ghia played by J Ryan Carroll. This over the top queen, controls the stage and audience with simply an arm and a few shakes here and there.

The insulting but comical punch lines scattered throughout the show leave the audience stunned but soon learn to get over it. The show is also filled with friendship, love and old ladies. Flawless set changes, flawless dance numbers and flawless vocals. No wonder this musical is a flop. (again it’s not)
