A Christmas Story: The Musical – Theatre Review

A Christmas Story: The Musical is the greatest gift you can give your eyes and ears this pre-holiday season. Last night, I had the pleasure of witnessing Broadway in New Mexico.  This hilariously entertaining show playing at Popejoy (for a limited time) is sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.

We all have seen the movie and for those who haven’t … where have you been? The movie follows Ralphie’s story of getting that Red Ryder BB gun. The musical has the same story but adds amazing dancing and music. However, the star surprisingly isn’t Ralphie, but his dad. You’ll have to attend the show, to see why I say that. There is no wonder why this show has won “A Major Award.”

The stage design made Popejoy look and feel like a snow globe Broadway. To the nostalgic look of the Parkers home and the snow, which actually sparkled, the stage enchanted reality. The stage came to life again, with amazing musical numbers like “It All Comes Down to Christmas” and the catchy “Ralphie to the Rescue!” A song so catchy, that during intermission you might be singing “oh oh oh ohhhh.”

The show gives the audience a different meaning of Christmas. Every year, we’re constantly obsessing over that special gift that will somehow make us happy. For the Parker Family, they later realize that gifts or leg lamps are not that important when you have your family by your side.

I will not give too much away, but I will tell you that some of your favorite movie scenes are all included. To name a few, you have Ralphie’s fight, which Holly Holm has no chance against. Oh and that classic Flick scene was there too, finding himself in a “Sticky Situation.”

“I triple dog dare you” to attend “A Christmas Story: The Musical” from Nov. 20th – Nov. 22nd (6 shows) at UNM Popejoy Hall.
